Negril is Jamaica's sunset capital: a long, calm beach on one side of town and dramatic limestone cliffs on the other. It is the easiest place on the island to slow right down — but it also has more to do than lie on a sun lounger. Here is how insiders actually spend a week in Westmoreland's most famous resort town.

Before 8am the beach is almost empty, the water is glassy and vendors haven't set up. It is the best free activity in town.
Rick's Café is the famous one, with cliff divers and live music. For a calmer view, try one of the smaller West End cliff bars or a lighthouse-area restaurant.
Many West End bars have jump platforms of different heights. Check depth, never jump after drinking and follow staff instructions.
Bring your own mask or rent one; the water off the cliffs is often clearer than the beach side.
The little island off Rutland Point is a classic half-day of snorkelling and white sand. Agree the price, return time and what's included before you board.
A short trip to the western tip of the island; pair it with lunch on the cliffs.
The south coast is 1–1.5 hours away. Combine YS Falls with a Black River crocodile safari — see our Treasure Beach guide for the full route.
Inland Westmoreland and Hanover have river swimming that cruise crowds never reach. Compare them in Dunn's River alternatives.
Jerk centres along the main roads, fresh fish on the beach and roast corn by the roadside. Our street food guide covers what to order and fair prices.
A peaceful wetland walk with birds and native palms — a nice change from the beach on a cloudy day.
Most visitors fly into Montego Bay. Book a licensed driver ahead so you are not negotiating after a long flight — get a free transfer quote and read our MBJ transfer tips.
Negril grocery runs can eat half a day. We can have water, Red Stripe, breakfast items and snacks waiting when you arrive — ask about villa stocking.
Carry small US$ notes and some JMD, confirm prices before any boat or tour, and use our JMD converter and tip calculator.
For beaches and sunsets, most visitors prefer Negril: Seven Mile Beach is longer and calmer and the West End cliffs are unique. Montego Bay is better for a short trip because it is 10–20 minutes from the airport and has more shopping and nightlife.
Roughly 75–90 minutes by road from Sangster International (MBJ), depending on traffic and stops. Arrange a licensed transfer in advance rather than negotiating at arrivals.
Go for the cliff-jumping show and sunset atmosphere, not the food. Arrive by late afternoon for a good spot, or watch the same sunset from quieter West End cliff bars nearby.
Seven Mile Beach suits swimmers and families; the West End cliffs suit couples, snorkellers and anyone who wants quieter nights and sunset views.
